Why Determination is Important When Being a Founder: Interview with Ndane Ndazhaga

What inspired you to start your EdTech Founder journey?
TeacherToolz started in December 2019 during the Naijahacks hackathon. TeacherToolz Emerged among the top twelve winning teams out of over a hundred participating teams. After the hackathon, TeacherToolz went through an incubation program organized by Africahacks and Biz-skills academy.
The desire to turn the hackathon idea into a product is a result of the passion to improve the educational sector in Nigeria and Africa..
Describe your company in one sentence.
TeacherToolz is an online platform that aims to reduce time spent by teachers in class preparation by providing access to curated lesson plans.
What should an aspiring EdTech founder know before initiating their startup journey?
Be determined, it is not going to be easy. Put God first, he is the only one that can strengthen you, especially when things seem tough.
What has been the most difficult moment as a founder and how did you overcome it?
We had the challenge of convincing people to use our platform. We got into a partnership with the National eGovernment Strategies (NeGST). Through this partnership, TeacherToolz will get into the hands of a number of Teachers in Nigeria.
What can the EdTech industry do to improve the gender gap?
By proving personal and professional support for women in Ed-tech.
Can you tell us about a role model of yours?
My role model is Norman Musengimana. Norman is the CEO of Biz-skills academy. He has always been there for me and the team. He is someone who is ready to listen to me, he inspires me greatly. He encourages me to pursue impact as that’s the key to greatness.
Can you tell us an example of when you had to pivot?
TeacherToolz’s primary target is teachers, we had to tweak to include features for students and parents as described below:
For the Students,
TeacherToolz allows the students to take classes by studying lesson plans that have been suited purposely to suit the learner’s needs.
Take assignments, take graded quizzes, and an automated Class rating by the students: This is to rate the learner’s experiences.
TeacherToolz allows parents to monitor student’s progress and provides access to student’s results.
What will you consider as success in 5 years from now?
The level of impact I have on people.
Looking back, what advice would you have liked to have received before starting your company?
Do not delay, just start.
